According to the statement seen by Reuters and two sources involved in this matter, Directors of Expo 2020 supports the proposal of pushing back the event by one year.

An estimated 11 million tourists from overseas were expected to attend this event experience the World’s largest show with the game-changing innovation that was about to start in October.

Dubai has announced on Monday that Expo 2020 will possibly postpone the event to the next year in order to allow the world recover from the COVID-19, following a meeting between the officials of UAE and foreign countries participating in this event.

Reem al-Hashimy, the director-general of Expo 2020, said in a statement that “The UAE and Expo 2020 Dubai have listened. And in the spirit of solidarity and unity, we supported the proposal to explore a one-year postponement at today’s steering committee meeting.”

Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, Secretary-general of the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions), welcomed organiser’s approach and the Steering Committee’s recommendations for one year delay in Expo 2020 in order to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic.

Expo 2020 Dubai is the world’s largest international event that is still officially scheduled this year.

A final decision on postponement will be made in June by BIE’s General Assembly, which awards the event.

The pandemic has made a huge impact on the global economy, infecting more than half a million people worldwide, and prompting countries to stay in their own country, putting a stop to some industries.
