As of January 8, 2025, American visitors traveling to the UK for tourism or business must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This requirement, similar to the ESTA for entry into the United States, aims to streamline immigration procedures and enhance border security.
Key Points About the UK ETA for U.S. Travelers:
- When to Apply: Applications have been open for the UK ETA for U.S. travelers.
- Cost: The application fee is £10.
- Validity: An ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. A new ETA may be necessary should you obtain a new passport.
- Multiple Entries: Holders of an ETA visa may make multiple trips to the UK, each stay lasting six months at most.
- Who Needs an ETA: U.S. and Canadian citizens, as well as nationals from around 50 countries, require an ETA. Gulf State nationals are already subject to this requirement. Starting April 2, 2025, this rule will also apply to many European nations.
Application Process:
- How to Apply: Applications can be submitted online or via the UK ETA app.
- Processing Time: Most applications can be approved within three working days; travelers are advised to apply as early as possible.
- Who Needs to Apply: Every traveler, including children, must apply for their own ETA. c
Benefits of the UK ETA:
- Enjoy an easier, safer entry process without needing a visa for short stays.
- Digital integration between traveler’s passport and immigration processes provides faster clearance times at immigration checkpoints.
