If everything goes as planned, this summer will see more nonstop flights between India and Canada and the United States than ever before. More than 5,800 services are planned, with approximately 1.8 million tickets available for purchase, roughly double the number in summer 2019. We take a look at what’s on offer, which includes 20 bookable trips on four airlines.
This summer, nine North American airports will provide nonstop flights to India. The airports with the most flights include Newark, Toronto, San Francisco, Chicago, JFK, Vancouver, Washington, Montreal, and Seattle. United Airlines and Air India, two Star Alliance members, are responsible for Newark’s dominance.
According to OAG data, Delhi has nearly nine out of ten nonstop flights, followed by Mumbai, Banglore, and Hyderabad. The fact that Delhi, India’s capital (officially New Delhi), is Air India’s major hub contributes to the city’s supremacy. At the same time, India’s national airline is the leading North American carrier (see below).
As you might assume, booking data reveals that Delhi has larger point-to-point passenger traffic (including transit passengers) to North America, but not always higher average rates.
- Air India: 42% of India-North Ameria non-stop flights this summer
- United: 30%
- Air Canada: 21%
- American: 7%
There are 20 nonstop itineraries and 12 airport-to-airport connections.
In the summer of 2019, there will be twenty routes, which will be doubled from the previous year. There are 12 airport pairs if airlines are removed. Another Star Alliance hub, Delhi to Toronto, has more flights than any other throughout the summer. Based on a week in July, I’ve summarized the scenario below.
Late last year, two new routes were introduced. In early November, Air Canada launched service from Montréal to Delhi, a point-to-point (P2P) market with 41,000 round-trip passengers in 2019. After an almost ten-year hiatus, Americans resumed service from JFK to Delhi. In 2019, 253,000 P2P travelers flew from Delhi to JFK.
