As of January 2026, the rules for entering the United Kingdom have officially changed.
If you are an American citizen planning to visit or transit through the UK this year, you can no longer fly with just your passport. The new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is now active.
While the system is currently in a “soft launch” phase, a strict “No ETA, No Fly” policy will be enforced by airlines starting next month. Here is everything you need to know to avoid being denied boarding.
1. The Critical Deadline: February 25, 2026
Although the ETA requirement officially technically began on January 8, 2026, the UK government is currently allowing a short “grace period” to help travelers adjust.
- Traveling NOW (Before Feb 25): You should apply for an ETA immediately. However, if you arrive at the airport without one during this window, you may still be allowed to travel, subject to border discretion.
- Traveling AFTER Feb 25: The grace period ends. Airlines will legally be required to deny boarding to any passenger who does not have a digitally approved ETA linked to their passport.
2. What You Need to Do (The 3-Step Process)
The ETA is not a visa; it is a digital permission to travel, similar to the U.S. ESTA.
- Step 1: Download the App. The fastest way to apply is via the “UK ETA” app (available on Google Play and Apple App Store). You can also apply online at the official UK government website.
- Step 2: Pay the Fee. The cost is £16 (approx. $22 USD) per person. This fee is non-refundable.
- Step 3: Wait for Approval. Most applications are approved within minutes, but it can take up to 3 working days.
- Travel Guzs Tip: Do not leave this until the night before your flight. Apply at least one week in advance.
3. Key Details at a Glance
| Feature | Details |
| Who Needs It? | All U.S. citizens, including infants and children. |
| Validity | 2 Years (or until your current passport expires). |
| Entry Allowance | Multiple entries permitted. |
| Max Stay | Up to 6 months per visit (Tourism/Business). |
| Processing Time | Up to 3 working days. |
4. A Major Change for Transit Passengers
In the past, Americans connecting through London Heathrow or Gatwick often did not need any paperwork. This has changed.
- If you pass through Border Control: You MUST have an ETA. This includes collecting bags, changing terminals landside, or overnight layovers where you leave the airport.
- If you stay “Airside”: If you remain in the international transit lounge and do not pass border control, you technically do not need an ETA.
- Our Advice: Because flight delays, terminal changes, or baggage re-checks can force you to cross the border unexpectedly, we strongly recommend all transit passengers obtain an ETA to prevent travel disruptions.
5. Who is Exempt?
You do NOT need an ETA if:
- You have a British or Irish passport.
- You already have a valid UK visa (e.g., student or work visa).
- You have legal residency status in the UK.
